MultiSoil – Working Together for Healthy Soils

Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture. MultiSoil is an EU‑funded innovation project under the Horizon Europe programme that develops and puts into practice new solutions to strengthen soil health across Europe. The project runs from September 2025 to February 2030 and supports the EU’s Soil Deal for Europe mission.

The aim of MultiSoil is to enhance soil biodiversity, reduce the use of chemicals, and support farmers in the transition towards more sustainable and climate‑resilient farming systems.

Why does soil matter?

Soil produces our food, stores carbon, and regulates the water cycle. Yet Europe’s soils are under increasing pressure. Climate change, pollution and intensive land use are degrading soil structure and vitality, affecting both crop yields and environmental quality.

MultiSoil addresses these challenges together with farmers, advisors and researchers. Within the project, scientific knowledge is translated into practical, field‑ready solutions that support both agricultural production and nature.

We aim to build the future of agriculture where healthy soil and rich biodiversity are key assets for farming. When natural soil functions are restored and reliance on chemical inputs is reduced, farming becomes more sustainable, yields more stable, and the environment healthier.

What does MultiSoil do in practice?

MultiSoil develops and tests farming methods that make use of nature‑based processes:

improving soil structure and fertility with organic materials such as compost and biochar
using beneficial microbes to support plant growth and resilience
promoting diversified crop rotations and farming systems to enhance biodiversity

These solutions are tested through field trials and demonstration sites across six European soil and climate zones in seven countries. Key crops include potato, sugar beet, maize, winter rye, wheat and olive.

In addition, the project supports integrated pest management (IPM) through nature‑based approaches that reduce the need for chemical inputs and strengthen natural pest control.

Learning, collaboration and implementation

People and knowledge are at the core of MultiSoil. The project supports farmers and advisors through training sessions, workshops and demonstration sites, while fostering close dialogue between research and practical farming.

The consortium includes 15 partners from eight European countries, comprising research institutes, universities and agricultural organisations. The project is coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). In Finland, the Finnish Sugar Beet Research Centre is also involved alongside Lykkan.

What are the benefits?

MultiSoil demonstrates that sustainable soil management delivers tangible benefits:

improved soil structure and nutrient cycling
increased biodiversity and more effective natural pest control
more stable yields and better adaptation to climate change
economically and socially more sustainable farming systems

As a final outcome, the project will deliver a practical toolbox bringing together tested, locally adapted solutions for farmers, advisors and decision‑makers. The results provide a strong evidence base for advancing sustainable agriculture across Europe.
